Vol. 135 Dec 2019
Cyberport and RETRO.HK co-organised Hong Kong Games Week 2019
Throngs of gamers and esports fans gathered at the Cyberport Arcade for the Hong Kong Games Week 2019, where tournaments of Street Fighter V, and classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse were the order of the day.

Capturing all eyes was the Red Bull Kumite 2019 Hong Kong SFV tournament. The event saw over 30 local street fighter pro players rumble for the one spot to represent Hong Kong at the global finals in Japan in December. In the end, "Talon | HotDog29" prevailed for the second time in a row, and will be fighting against 255 top players from around the world at the Aichi Sky Expo for the ultimate glory.

The Hong Kong Games Week 2019, held during November, also catered to those who preferred something familiar with a dash of nostalgia. Three games of yore – Sonic the Hedgehog, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, and Tetris – were featured in RetroCup 2019. Dozens of classic videogames with CRT TVs were setup at the Retro Game Zone for members of the public to play to their heart’s delight.

Additionally, a special edition of "Classic Tetris World Championship" - CTWC for Charity was held, in which the players raised funds for charity with every Tetris they get. Every time a player does a "Tetris", meaning to clear 4 lines at one, a USD$10 will be donated to Elderly Healthcare Foundation of Hong Kong.  Within the time limit of 1.5 hours, the 6 Hong Kong Tetris players got 112 Tetrises and raised USD$1,120 to help the elderly in need of appropriate healthcare.

This was the second edition of the Hong Kong Games Week and the fifth yearly event by “RETRO.HK | Hong Kong Game Association (HKGA)” since 2015. The original RETRO.HK Gaming Expo has adopted a "Games Week" format last year, incorporating more content such as modern esports tournaments, education tours, workshops, etc. In the past, Cyberport has also collaborated with “RETRO.HK | HKGA” on a Halloween retrogame expo and exhibition event in the Arcade, and also the first Classic Tetris World Championship Hong Kong stop event.
